Scientists discover massive ring around Satur
Rating 3.2
Scientists at NASA have discovered a nearly invisible ring around Saturn -- one so large that it would take 1 billion Earths to fill it.
NASAs Spitzer Space Telescope has spotted a massive, nearly invisible ring around Saturn.
The rings orbit is tilted 27 degrees from the planets main ring plane. The bulk of it starts about 3.7 million miles (6 million km) away from the planet and extends outward another 7.4 million miles (12 million km).
Its diameter is equivalent to 300 Saturns lined up side to side. And its entire volume can hold one billion Earths, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory said late Tuesday.
This is one supersized ring, said Anne Verbiscer, an astronomer ... Read More
Bio-assembler uses magnetic levitation to ass

Mass culture of cell lines – the process by which cells are grown under controlled conditions – has long been fundamental to the manufacture of viral vaccines and many products of biotechnology. More recently it also has become an essential tool in stem cell research and tissue engineering. Most conventional petri dish based cell culture techniques produce monolayers cell growth that is missing essential cellular functions that are present in living organisms; gene expression, signaling and morphology can be different and this compromises its clinical relevance. It limits their potential to predict the cellular responses of real organisms. One major impact of cell cultures that more closely resemble native tissue will be better results ... Read More

File-Sharer Says “No” to RIAA’s $25k Offer To
Rating 0.2
Just days after a judge reduced the $1.92m damages bill handed down to Jammie Thomas to a slightly more sensible $54,000, her legal team have turned down an offer to settle for $25,000.
Outrage at the huge damages eventually resulted in Judge Davis lowering the damages last week to $54,000.
To try and bring the whole sorry episode to an end, yesterday the RIAA made an offer to Thomas to settle the case for $25,000, if she agreed to ask the judge to “vacate” last week’s decision, which means removing it from the record.
Last year Jammie Thomas lost her retrial against the RIAA and was ordered to pay $1.92 million in damages for sharing 24 songs using Kazaa.
Her lawyers immediately rejected the offer, ind ... Read More
Discarded photocopier hard drives stuffed ful
Rating 0.4
Your offices high-end photocopier probably has a hard-drive used to store copies of documents that are scanned from the glass. Harvesting scanned documents from discarded office copiers (often returned at the end of a lease) yields a treasure-trove of fascinating corporate secrets.
Of the dozens of multi-purpose copiers Beitner has cleaned out in the past two years, he has seen hundreds of scanned documents that would be considered confidential. As a personal policy, he never reads them, but can easily tell where they are by the file names and sizes.
In almost all the machines I have seen, the files, phone numbers, fax numbers and email addresses are left there as if it was still in the office, said Beitner. There are files from insuranc ... Read More
